Checking your engine oil level is one of the simplest but most important car maintenance tasks you can do. Here is a simple step-by-step guide.
What You Need
You just need a clean cloth or paper towel and the correct oil for your vehicle (check your owner's manual for the right grade).
Step by Step
- Park on level ground and wait for the engine to cool slightly (5-10 minutes after driving)
- Open the bonnet and locate the dipstick (usually has a brightly coloured handle)
- Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with the cloth
- Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again
- Check the oil level against the minimum and maximum markings
When to Top Up
If the oil level is at or below the minimum mark, add oil in small amounts and check again. Do not overfill as this can cause damage.
When to Change Your Oil
Oil should be changed every 3,000-5,000 miles with conventional oil, or every 7,500-15,000 miles with synthetic oil. Check your owner's manual for specific recommendations.
